Latest 2.5-inch 640GB dual platter HDD meets increasing demand for high capacity energy efficient storage

Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, the world leader in small form factor hard disk drive (HDD) technology, has announced the launch of the highest capacity 2.5-inch drive to date. The MK6465GSX 640GB dual platter drive, with its 5400RPM will provide Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with a high capacity drive which doesn’t compromise on portability or power consumption.

Toshiba is dedicated to the innovation of small form factor drives and the MK6465GSX HDD is part of a new line of products developed to provide high capacity storage for applications with limited space such as commercial and consumer notebook PCs, all-in-one desktop PCs, Energy Star PCs, high-definition television, set-top-boxes and game consoles.

A recent IDC report[1] has predicted that by 2011 almost 50% of all digital data will not have permanent storage. Media rich content is growing fast due to the increased production of user generated material like digital images, videos and emails. All this accounts for only half of the digital universe, the rest is made up of digital ‘shadows’ such as web search histories. Large capacity small form factor drives are needed to manage the rapid production of this digital content.

The MK6465GSX is part of a new series of drives with capacities ranging from 160 – 640GB. With an interface transfer speed of 3 gigabits-per-sec. and a high areal density of up to 528.5 gigabits-per-square-inch, the series is ideal for downloading and storing media rich content on space constrained devices such as notebook PCs. At the top end capacity the MK6465GSX will let you store up to 168,000 digital music files at an average size of 3.8MB, or 520 downloaded digital movies of high-definition video at an average size of 1.2GB.[2] The range is also available with a free-fall sensor technology option which protects the drive and any stored data from damage in the event of it being dropped.

Despite its large capacity the MK6465GSX doesn’t compromise on energy efficiency; even the 640GB has a high level of energy consumption efficiency of only 0.00086W/GB. Compared to similar capacity 3.5-inch drives, the power consumption and heat dissipation are reduced by over 80%. This means that the MK6465GSX runs cooler during operation, enhancing drive reliability and providing better long-term access to valuable user content.

Martin Larsson, Vice President and General Manager, Toshiba Europe Storage Device Division, said: “In today’s digital content-based world the demand for storage capacity continues to increase. The MK6465GSX is a 2.5-inch form factor drive with the capacity and power consumption to rival a 3.5-inch drive. It provides the ideal solution for OEMs looking to increase storage capacity without impacting on portability or power consumption.”

In August 2009 the Capricorn BS was certified by the Toshiba Group as an Excellent ECP, a standard awarded for major environmental performance. The product will be available to Distribution and System Integrators from Quarter 4 2009.

[2] One Gigabyte (1 GB) means 109 =1,000,000,000 bytes using powers of 10. A computer operating system, however, reports storage capacity using powers of 2 for the definition of 1 GB = 230= 1,073,741,824 bytes, and therefore shows less storage capacity. Available storage capacity (including examples of various media files) will vary based on file size, formatting, settings, software and operating system. Examples of the number of photos, songs, movies, and any other files that can be stored on a hard drive are provided for illustrative purposes only. Your results will vary based on file size and format, settings, features, operating system, software and other factors.
